NYFW SS2013, Sept. 8th & 9th

Annnnnd the NYFW excitement continues. September 8th marked the 3rd official day of NYFW. Big name designers took to the runway to show their SS2013 collections, including: Alexander Wang, Altuzzara, and Prabal Gurung.

(Alexander Wang, SS2013 RTW)

Alexander Wang is definitely one of the most memorable shows from the SS2013 season. Wang kept it clean and simple but made a lasting impression. The collection experimented with suspension and laser cut leather pieces which created garments that were visually interesting. However, the clean color palette that mainly consisted of black and white when paired with simple styling, kept the collection modern. Show goers were stunned when the lights were dimmed and the models lit up (^see photo at top). The girls have almost an alien look to them and even if that sounds strange I assure you it’s super cool. I recommend that you’re as big of an Alexander Wang fan as I am then to click here, and view the video from the show, because overall it was a great show from start to finish and it’s awesome to watch the mood change when the girls light up!

(Altuzarra, SS2013 RTW)

This Altuzarra collection was ALL about the detail. The looks for Altuzarra SS2013, were perfectly put together. Light colored fabrics mixed with gold detailing and prints created a beautiful and almost ethereal vibe. Although, Altuzarra isn’t necessarily my personal style, I did enjoy the jackets and blazers in this collection. Also, added bonus- many of the pieces in this collection can transition from day to night, and who doesn’t love that?

(Prabal Gurung, SS2013 RTW)

As one of the younger designers, I always look forward to seeing what Prabal Gurung comes up with each season. Kind of edgy and slight feminine- Prabal Gurung’s SS2013, did not dissapoint. Gurung took a risk with silhouettes for his SS2013 collection. Pants layered under flowy dresses, belted tops, assymetrical cuts, and drop-waist dresses, all played a prominent role in the collection. The overall look was very modern and fashion forward. Gurung proved again, that he has no shortage of good ideas.

September 9th, the fourth official day of NYFW,  included more big names such as: DKNY, Tommy Hilfiger, Zac Posen, and Diane Von Furtsenberg.

(DKNY, SS2013 RTW)

DKNY SS2013 was a collection that contained a wide range of some of today’s hottest trends, including: sheer, side slits in skirts/dresses (a la angelina jolie), metallics, leather for spring, and denim on denim. The collection was young and fresh and I can see tons of girls dying to wear some of these pieces, myself included. I’m especially in love with the second look (^pictured above), and the high heel sneakers? I can’t get enough of them. The collection contained a lot of neutral pieces but pop colors of yellow helped bring an appropriate spring vibrancy to the looks. Overall, the collection was very on trend, and although that alone can have it’s positive and negative aspects, it seems to be working fairly well for DKNY.

(Tommy Hilfiger, SS2013 RTW)

Tommy Hilfiger, stayed true to himself in his SS2013 collection. The collection was perfectly preppy and contained classic elements such as stripes, button-ups, fitted sweaters, and many more. A patriotic color palette was used, containing mostly red, white, and blue, with accents of white, tan, and black. Overall, the collection was classic Tommy, fairly commercial, and the pieces were all very wearable for spring.

(Zac Posen, SS2013 RTW)

Zac Posen’s SS2013 collection is stunning. From short dresses that sway with every step, gorgeous mermaid style dresses, and larger than life ball gowns, Posen’s collection emulated old school Hollywood glamour in every possible way. I’m super excited to see which of these dresses will make their way onto the red carpet for the upcoming award seasons. Zac Posen knows what looks good on a woman’s body which is why these dresses are all about the construction and cut. Details are important for such over the top pieces, and Posen never fails to get them the attention they deserve. Overall, the collection was absolutely breathtaking, but it’s not like I expected anything less from him.

(Diane Von Furtsenberg, SS2013 RTW)

CFDA president, Diane Von Furtsenberg, presented a SS2013 collection that was full of bold prints and colors. From the aqua blue and lime green color choices and the high contrast prints, mixed with flowy skirts and dresses, DVF SS2013 screams spring in every way possible. Metallics and color blocking were also used throughout the collection, which kept it on trend. Very little styling was applied to these looks which is the true beauty of the pieces in this collection; singularly each piece is so interesting and eye catching that you could literally throw it on and go. The collection could fit the lifestyles of a wide range of women, which is what makes it successful.
