I’ve been swamped at work over the past few weeks. Given that we prepare for each issue of the magazine at least a few months out, I’ve been busy pulling gift gift products from tons of local and national brands despite it still being about two months until the holidays. While I’ve come across a lot of great items — ahem, luxury candles and face mask box sets — the No.1 item I’ve been pinning over (and suggesting readers invest in) is this season’s outerwear.
Whether it’s a gift for you or someone else, the outwear I’ve come across while browsing lookbook after lookbook is definitely worth investing in. Coats and jackets are obviously always in style year after year (Outwear, for winter? Groundbreaking.), but this season we’re seeing more bold colors, prints, and silhouettes. In particular, brands like Max Mara, Coach, and Gucci, which recently announced it would no longer use real fur, are all killing the cold-weather game. Below, check out a few of my favorite outwear trends from the FW2017 season, and my ideas on how to style them.
I live in the Midwest, which essentially means that a puffer jacket is a necessity. Usually, this would be met with disdain, but I’m really digging the options this season. From floral prints at Coach 1941 to bright yellow hues at Fenty Puma, the puffers we’re seeing right now are super loud. Because of this, I love the idea of paring a fun puffer coat/jacket with upgraded basics, like a metallic midi skirt, patent leather booties, and slouchy turtleneck. Don’t forget to tuck your sweater into the waistband to add some structure to this casual, yet cozy, look.
Like the trench coat, the peacoat is another classic silhouette that’s getting a revamp for FW17. This type of coat serves as the perfect blank canvas for cool prints, colors, and textures, and, this season, designer brands are definitely taking advantage of this. Tory Burch and Versace both had some really cool takes on the look, but Ralph Lauren, which showed an auto-themed collection with checkered print peacoats, really stole my heart. Inspired by this, I’d suggest pairing a peacoat with a neutral midi dress and your sassiest booties for an outfit to remember.
